Description
Dorothy is our 19 year old, skewbald mare standing at 12.2hh.
Dorothy has a sweet nature who enjoys being groomed and time spent getting fussed over. She is good to do for the farrier and vet however when leading can be strong at times so would need a confident handler. Dorothy gets a regular clip, usually a trace clip including the legs which benefits her by keeping her cool and comfortable as she has had a history of feather mites. She is well behaved when getting clipped, sedation is only used to clip her lower legs due to irritation from mite bites.
She is happy to be stabled overnight or live out 24/7 with access to a shelter. Dorothy is good with both geldings and mares. As Dorothy is a good-doer she will need her weight managed carefully to prevent obesity. Although she cannot be ridden Dorothy enjoys light exercise and time spent with other horses including in hand walks either in our woods or on the road. Alternatively she does activities in the arena such as longreining over poles, through cones and occasionally lunged.
Dorothy has rain scald scarring behind her withers which is treated daily using Vaseline or protection plus salve. In wet or hot weather this must be protected with either a turnout rug or fly rug.
Dorothy is a non-ridden companion pony. This is due to veterinary advice regarding a stiff pelvis. In addition, she has a strong dislike for the bridle as well as her rain scald being irritated. She is now happily retired.
