Spotlight on Collies
Collies are a highly intelligent breed with a very high drive to work. Bred for herding livestock and widely used in farming for this purpose, they have an innate desire to herd and to work. Collies are rarely bred as pets; most collies are bred to work on farms or for dog sports. Border Collies bred for showing are likely to have a temperament more suited to a domestic home. Due to their complex needs, collies require a great deal of not only physical exercise but mental stimulation to fulfil them. Collies excel in many areas, herding, search and rescue and dog sports such as agility and flyball. They are fast and clever, love to learn new skills and work with their handlers. They are an affectionate dog that loves to be with people.
Collies represented 13% of the breeds surrendered to Oak Tree last year. They do not make suitable pets for people who are unable to meet their high demand for exercise and stimulation. An under-stimulated collie may show undesirable behaviours due to frustration. Their desire to fulfil their natural instincts can be shown inappropriately through herding cars, bikes, people, or other dogs. They can become destructive or vocal in the house due to frustration and boredom if left alone for long periods or inadequately exercised. Collies can make good pets for people involved in sports such as agility, fly ball, scent work and obedience or who have a very active lifestyle and are able to meet their needs.
