Remembering Animals Lost in War

Over 30 people gathered yesterday at the war memorial at Oak Tree Farm to remember those animals lost in war. The Act of Remembrance, led by Rev. Graeme Skinner, remembered the bravery of animals such as Sasha, a Labrador retriever who found 15 IED’s and much weaponry in Afghanistan before being ambushed and killed in service with her handler; Winkie, a carrier pigeon who’s brave flight contributed to the rescue of an Air Crew in 1942 and all the other animals who have served or currently serve in our armed forces. The service also remembered those animals who are inadvertent casualties of war or who lose their home through war. Wreaths were laid by Oak Tree Animals’ Charity, Animals in War – Carlisle Branch and the North West Homing Union.

The purple poppy recognises animals lost in war and this year, Oak Tree managed to raise over £40 through the sale of purple poppies for War Horse Memorial who support several equine charities in the UK.

Our annual Act of Remembrance is a poignant reminder for our staff, volunteers and supporters, of the huge animal sacrifice and suffering caused by war and conflict. This service enables us to reflect on the enormity of this suffering and recognise and remember these amazing animals who would not have understood the reasons behind the conflict. We would like to thank all of those who attended the Act of Remembrance and those who made it possible. We are also delighted also to have been able to raise over £40 for the War Horse Memorial through the sale of purple poppies.
