Dog Training Onsite at Oak Tree Farm

2nd December 2020

In every dog’s day, opportunity to train or learn through play is a major event. You may not realise that you are training your dog when you play with him, pet him or feed him but he is certainly learning – what he is learning is up to you!

Here at Oak Tree, the training team works with the Small Animal Team to devise a suitable, entertaining, effective and individual plan for each Oak Tree dog. The training plans are designed to be comprehensive – a holistic approach to the dog including consideration of  their past training, their personality, rehoming requirements, diets, exercise, enrichment and more.

The training plans are not only designed to make the dogs’ time at Oak Tree easier and more enjoyable but also to prepare them for their new homes. The relationship between dogs and their new adopters is crucial and training can help boost that relationship whilst helping dogs to settle into their new homes.  Each adopter is sent home with their dog’s most important training activities. We see many different varieties of dogs with a vast array of different behaviours so we consider in depth how best to approach the training for any particular dog. Some dogs may display similar behaviours but have very different training plans.

Whilst the team has a comprehensive approach to training, ensuring the dogs at Oak Tree have every opportunity to be at their best, time is dedicated to targeting each dog’s biggest struggles. Coming into the kennel environment can be very overwhelming for some dogs but initial settling in training sessions help our team to learn their likes and dislikes and to plan what they can do to help them. This could include, for example, muzzle training to help dogs who require it for vet treatment or reactivity work when seeing other dogs. These targeted sessions mean that we are helping improve the behaviours of our dogs which could affect how quickly we can find them a new home. We also spend time on general sessions during the day to help our dogs improve their behaviour overall and give them enjoyable mental stimulation.  This encourages the growth of a great relationship between dog and human which will be of great benefit as the dog moves into their new home.
